Risk warnings about borrowing

If a loan is denominated in a currency other than Sterling, changes in the exchange rate may increase the Sterling equivalent of the debt. Compensation

In the UK only, Barclays Bank PLC is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (see http://www.fscs.org.uk/ for further details).

Banking: In respect of deposits with a UK office, payments under the Scheme are limited to £35,000 (which is 100% of the first £35,000). Most depositors, including individuals and small firms, are covered.  The Scheme covers deposits made with the offices of the bank within the European Economic Area and deposits denominated in all currencies are treated alike.
Investment: You may be entitled to compensation from the scheme if we cannot meet our obligations. This depends on the type of business and the circumstances of the claim. Most types of investment business are covered for 100% of the first £30,000 and 90% of the next £20,000, so the maximum compensation is £48,000.

Barclays Private Clients International (Gibraltar) Limited is a participant in the Gibraltar Investor Compensation Scheme. Payments under the Scheme are limited to 90% of a client's total eligible investments which qualify for compensation under the Act subject to a maximum payment to any one client of €20,000. Further details of the Scheme are available on request.

Deposits made with the Isle of Man office of Barclays Private Clients International Limited are covered by the Depositors Compensation Scheme contained in the Banking Business (Compensation of Depositors) regulations 1991.

Each depositor's sterling deposits, or the equivalent of foreign currency deposits, are protected as to 75% of the first £20,000 up to a maximum of £15,000 subject to those conditions set out in the Compensation of Depositors Regulations 1991.  Separate deposits in the same ownership will be aggregated for compensation purposes. The Depositors Compensation Scheme is managed on behalf of the Isle of Man Government by the Financial Supervision Commission.
