Training and development
The Embark Training and Development Programme is designed to provide Embarkees with the knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in the role as a Private Banker. Our training covers many aspects including product and interpersonal skills training, systems training, professional qualifications training in addition to presentations from senior business representatives. Embarks also have the opportunity to spend time with their teams consolidating their learnings and understanding how they work in practice.
The Programme, spanning up to 12 weeks, uses a modular approach including classroom lectures, group discussions, case studies, assignments and internal speakers. The Programme is intensive, giving the participants a comprehensive understanding of the Private Bank, the product suite, and its clients.
Below you will find a breakdown of the each aspect of the Training and Development Programme:
Product knowledge
Our world-class training providers deliver technical and product knowledge to include: the markets, equity and collectives, tax, credit, derivatives and structured products, foreign exchange, economics to name a few. Once Embarkees have completed their training programme and are working alongside their teams, they will be able to apply the technical concepts learned in order to understand how they can be applied when providing a high level of service to clients.
Interpersonal skills
Embarkees undertake soft-skills training covering rapport building, presentation skills, and how to communicate effectively. Embarkees will learn techniques, skills and methods to enable them to understand clients' values, behaviours and language in order to build and sustain client relationships, thus fostering a more conducive business relationship.
Business presentations
A number of experts across the Barclays organisation will lead training sessions throughout the Programme. These will provide you with a broader knowledge of the firm and activities within the individual businesses as well as an insight into current and future strategy.
These sessions will supplement the training offered by our external providers to provide Embarkees with an internal view of how we use different products as part of our service offering to clients. They will also provide an insight into current events and their impact on Barclays.
Professional qualifications
During the training programme, Embarks are required to complete and pass the Investment Advice Diploma (IAD) which is delivered by 7city. Embarks may also be required to undertake the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
Team experience
We endeavourer to provide Embarkees with 'hands-on' experience during their training period. With this in mind, we allocate specific days where Embarkees will spend time with their team in a functioning Private Banking desk. Embarkees will be able to consolidate learning and put into context the themes and subjects learnt during the week.
Networking and social events
Networking and social events allow you the opportunity to introduce yourself to new people, future potential colleagues and help you start to build your own profile. Throughout the Programme you will attend events which will allow you to raise your profile and start building your business connections.
Assessment
Throughout the Programme you will work towards presenting a tailored wealth solution for a particular client. The presentation will be made at the end of the Programme and will be assessed by a mixed audience including your business sponsor.
The skills and attributes that you should demonstrate through your final presentation are listed below, but not exhaustive but as a minimum should act as a guide to what is required to successfully present the client brief:
- Demonstrate presence and impact
- Build and leverage relationships
- Communicate effectively
- Focus on the client
- Drive results
- Demonstrate business acumen
- Apply technical expertise
After the Training and Development Programme
Once you have completed all the elements of the Training and Development Programme, you will return to your team and start building your own book of clients. Your Mentor, Buddy, Line Managers and the team will be on hand to support you through this process.
