How can I apply for the Embark Programme?
Applications should be submitted via our online application form.
The online application portal, to apply for the 2012 Embark Programme, is now open. We will be recruiting Embarks into the following locations across the UK & Ireland offices: London, Liverpool, Aberdeen, Bristol, Birmingham, and Newcastle. Once we open the application portal, you will be able to select your first and second preferred location. Your application will initially be managed according to your first preference.
Simply register your details, attach your CV, undertake the two ability tests and answer our business questions. Find out about our Recruitment and Selection Process. If you are successful during each stage of our selection process you will be required to attend an Assessment Centre. Each Assessment Centre lasts half a day and is held in either the morning or the afternoon. Details will be confirmed if you are invited to attend.

We understand that our Embarks may be new to the industry, however we have set some key competencies and behaviours that we expect our Embarks to demonstrate and will look for during our selection process, these include:

What is the recruitment and selection process?

Is there a deadline to apply by?
Application deadlines will vary according to the location you are applying to.
What Ability Tests do I need to complete?
During the initial application stage, candidates will be expected to complete two ability tests, numerical reasoning test and an in-tray exercise. To find our more on ability tests visit cut-e.com or to complete a practice tests by visiting maptq.com using the password Embark.
Candidates who are invited to attend an Assessment Centre will also be required to complete a ‘hard copy’ numerical reasoning test on the day.
Please note: Ability tests form part of your assessment and will not be measured in isolation.
How many Embark Programmes do you run per year?
In 2012 we will be running one Embark Programme, scheduled to commence in September 2012.
When does the next Programme start?
The next Programme is scheduled to commence in September 2012.

We recognise that there are many transferable skills gained from various disciplines and we welcome people from diverse backgrounds to apply the breadth of their experience whilst carving out a new career as a Private Banker.

Is there an age limit to apply for the programme?
No. We do not apply an age limit and we invite applications from people of all ages. We do advise, however, that the role of a Private Banker is a long-term career choice, so you need to be sure that this fits with your long-term career aspirations.

How long is the Training and Development Programme?
The Training and Development Programme is scheduled over an 8 -12 week period. We endeavour to incorporate your professional qualifications into the training programme. The majority of the training programme will be held in London. For more information on the training programme click here.
What can I expect from the training?
The Embark Training and Development Programme has been designed to provide Embarks with the knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in the role as a Private Banker. Our training covers many aspects including product and technical training, interpersonal skills training, systems training in addition to presentations from senior business representatives, professional qualifications and the opportunity to spend time with your teams consolidating your learnings.
The Programme uses a modular approach including classroom lectures, group discussions, case studies, assignments and internal speakers. The Programme is intensive, giving the Embarks a comprehensive understanding of Barclays, the product suite, and its clients.
What professional qualifications do I need to complete?
During the training programme, Embarks are required to complete and pass the Investment Advice Diploma (IAD) which is delivered by 7city. Embarks may also be required to undertake the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
What support will I receive after the training programme?
You will have a dedicated Line Manager and a team who will support you after the training programme in addition to your mentor and a buddy who will be able to provide you with guidance, support, advice and encouragement.
At what point, after my training, will I be able to advise clients?
Embarks are required to complete and pass the Investment Advice Diploma (IAD), gain registration with the Financial Services Authority and pass an internal client framework role play before being able to give advice to clients.
How do you decide which team I'll be assigned to?
We recruit Embarks into both our CORE and High Net Worth teams. During the selection process senior bankers will identify which team would better utilise your current skills, previous experience and interests and align you accordingly.
Will travel be a part of this role?
It is very possible you may have to travel in your job and this will depend on where your clients are based.
What is expected of me in the role of Private Banker?
The objectives of the role will be to acquire, develop, retain and service a portfolio of complex clients.
What are the key responsibilities of a Private Banker?
A Private Banker's key responsibilities include:
- Identify clients' needs and objectives and provide comprehensive financial solutions
- Increase assets under management and profitability from new and existing clients
- Prepare bespoke client solutions as necessary
- Identify new product opportunities and needs in the marketplace
- Co-ordinate effectively with product providers and booking units
- Identify opportunities to acquire qualifying new clients

How will my performance be measured?
Private Banker performance is typically measured on revenues, assets under management, client retention, product mix and product penetration.
How many clients will I have as an Embark?
When you join your team you will be expected to start creating your client book. You will not be given a book of clients to manage, however, you will be given the support, guidance and advice on how to go about developing your client base. The number of clients you have is down to you.
What is the compensation of an Embark?
The compensation and benefits we offer to Embarks is competitive and managed on an individual basis.
