David Semaya succeeds Mark Kibblewhite as Head of UK & Ireland Private Bank
Barclays Wealth, the UK's largest wealth manager, today announces the appointment of David Semaya as Head of UK & Ireland Private Bank (UK&IPB). David succeeds Mark Kibblewhite, who will retire from Barclays Wealth in the spring of 2010 after a transition period; although he will subsequently be joining the UK&IPB Advisory Board.
David Semaya joins from Barclays Global Investors (BGI), where he started in 2004. He became Chief Executive for BGI Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia (excluding Japan) in 2006. In this role he had overall responsibility for the development and oversight of all of BGI’s business in those regions and was a member of BGI's Global Executive Committee. He was also co-head of the firm’s Client Solutions business. Prior to BGI, David had 12 years in senior positions at Merrill Lynch which included heading the Asset Management Business at Merrill Lynch Investment Management Japan and a number of positions in the Capital Markets Division in New York and Tokyo.
Mark Kibblewhite joined Barclays Wealth from Barclays Capital in 2005, where he had held a series of senior positions since joining Barclays in 1986. His retirement had been planned for a while and he leaves the firm to spend more time with his young family and to concentrate on business interests already established outside of financial services.
Thomas L. Kalaris, Chief Executive of Barclays Wealth, commented:
"Mark has been a central figure on our Management Committee for the past four years and his contribution to the establishment and development of Barclays Wealth can hardly be overstated. We are sorry to lose him, but I fully respect his personal decision to retire and wish him every success. I am delighted that he has agreed to join our Private Bank Advisory Board so that we can continue to call upon his sound judgement and experience.
"In David Semaya we have a very strong successor. He brings a wealth of relevant expertise to this role, having worked across a broad range of financial services and with extensive experience in the client-facing and investment areas. His five years within the Barclays Group makes him an ideal cultural fit as well."
David will join Barclays Wealth in December and will work alongside Mark to ensure a smooth transition before Mark departs at the end of March 2010.
